Nature Of Counselling

Living in the modern world, surrounded by confusion and at times apparent chaos, we are all often exposed to difficulties and challenging situations. At times we may feel at a loss about our current circumstances and perceive the world as a harsh and cruel reality, resulting in one feeling isolated, lonely and restricted with an inability to move forward.

We all encounter problems such as relationship difficulties, work demands, financial obligations, unemployment, divorce or a myriad of other pressures we may face on a daily basis. Inability to respond positively to life's ever changing situations can tax the resources of the individual and reduce the overall well being and quality of one's life, resulting quite often in stress, anxiety, depression or complete immobilisation.

Through repeated difficulty in managing these daily challenges in life, individuals will commonly yield to pressure from the environment, compromise their own personal values and in turn, repression leads to pain being buried deeply within the body. As a result, the struggle for balance is internalised, tension increases from holding the natural impulse to respond, thus contributing to ill health and a survival oriented behaviour manifests.

This habitual style of behaviour often leads to victimisation and can result in tendencies, such as uncontrollable mood swings, or violent out bursts of anger on unsuspecting others at a later date. These can be close associates or loved ones, the outcome of which can in turn undermine valuable relationships.

We therefore need to re-evaluate our current behaviour, and develop a more effective and positive response to situations that appear overwhelming, and in turn, promote individual responsibility for self, feelings and direction.

The purpose of counselling is to assist individuals through a helping relationship to make changes and adjustments in their lives to alleviate stress and reduce unrest. To create and discover choices that are available to us in order to eliminate negative responses from challenging situations. The outcome is to ensure growth and actively move beyond self- defeating behaviour.

Confidentiality

The counselling and therapy sessions are a very personal interaction between the client and counsellor. This interaction can only be based on a foundation of trust, safety and confidentiality. It is for this reason, that a statement of confidentiality will be signed by both client and counsellor before the commencement of any dialogue.
